Overview:

Radford University supports 20GB of secure storage on self-hosted servers for each member of our community.  This drive is an excellent resource for Radford University students, faculty, and staff.  Also known as the H: or home drive, this network drive is accessible from any Internet connection and can be used to store any files.  File backups are automatically made each evening so you can be assured your files are safe.

Why would I use the network drive?

Whether you are using a wireless laptop or a lab computer, you can save your work on campus and access it from home.  You can copy a presentation to your network drive from home and access it from a podium computer in a classroom.

Where can I access the network drive?

The H-drive is accessible from an Internet connection anywhere.  Note:  If off-campus, you must first connect to the VPN client to access your H-Drive.

The steps below walk through how to connect to the H: drive or a department shared drive.

1. Open File Explorer

2. Click on This PC

3. Click on the Computer tab

4. Click Map Network Drive

5. Select a Drive letter (this is an arbitrary selection, however most users choose H if it is available)

6. Type the network share address in the Folder text field

· For H drive: \\userdir\YourRUUsername

· For whale share: \\whale\sharename (example: \\whale\helpdesk) Select Reconnect at logon if you would like to have this drive automatically connect each time you log on. (If you are using a personal machine you might need to connect to the share using the following convention \\whale.radford.edu\sharename)

NOTE:  Select Connect using different credentials ONLY if you are logging into the shared drive with a username and password that is different from the one used to log into the computer.  NOTE:  You will be prompted with a dialog box for different credentials if you select this option.

7. Select OK

8. A window will appear with the contents of your network drive.  You can now access your network drive from "My Computer" or from any application when you open or save documents.
