Syncing OneDrive to Your Local Computer (PC)

Overview:

OneDrive is the recommended default file storage for most files. With OneDrive, you can access all of your files, photos from any device with internet access, and it provides 1 TB of storage to each Radford University user. It is NOT to be used for files containing highly sensitive information, such as Social Security numbers, credit card information, etc.

Sync your OneDrive folder to your local computer by following the steps below:

  1. In the Windows search bar, type OneDrive>Click Open.
  2. If the Setup screen does not open, then open File Explorer>Click the OneDrive icon.
  3. At the Set up OneDrive screen, enter your Radford email address and click Sign In.
  4. Choose Work or school account.
  5. Enter your Radford credentials at the Radford SSO page.
  6. Read and follow the prompts for the next 6 screens.
  7. Your synced OneDrive folder opens and now shows OneDrive-Radford University

OneCampus logo with the words Radford University indicating that it is synced.

You may now save, copy, edit, and delete folders and files to your OneDrive, just as you would any other folder/file on your computer. In addition, you can also drag and drop files and folders to OneDrive-Radford University folder in File Explorer.

Syncing with “File on Demand” frees up the hard drive space on your computer, while still keeping all files available through OneDrive. This short video describes more about the File On Demand feature. Syncing OneDrive with Files On Demand

Your files will have these statuses in File Explorer:

Blue cloud icon indicating an online-only OneDrive file

A blue cloud icon next to a OneDrive file or folder indicates that the file is only available online. Online-only files don’t take up space on your computer. You see a cloud icon for each online-only file in File Explorer, but the file doesn’t download to your device until you open it. You can’t open online-only files when your device isn’t connected to the Internet.

Green check icon indicating a locally available OneDrive file

When you open an online-only file, it downloads to your device and becomes a locally available file. You can open a locally available file anytime, even without Internet access. If you need more space, you can change the file back to online only. Just right-click the file and select “Free up space.”

With Storage Sense turned on, these files will become online-only files after the time period you've selected.

Green circle icon indicating an always-available OneDrive file

Only files that you mark as "Always keep on this device" have the green circle with the white check mark. These always available files download to your device and take up space, but they’re always there for you even when you’re offline.
