Setting Default Programs (Windows 11)


Overview:
This article goes over the instructions for setting the way a program opens on a Windows 11 computer.

  1. Click on the Windows button, type in “default apps” until it appears under the Best match area and click on Default apps.

  1. You can either search for a file type (.pdf, .docx, .html, etc) and set a default application or search for an application and select defaults from there.

NOTE: This article will be using the Set defaults for application for further instructions as well as showcasing how to set a default browser. You can skip to step 5 to view what the screen looks like when choosing a default application for a file type.

 

  1. Once you know of an application you would like to set defaults for, you can search for it or scroll through until you find the application you are looking for.

  1. Click on the application to view options for defaults based on file types. Also, if you clicked on a browser, you could select Set default at the top to make the browser your default.

  1. If you click on a file type to set its default application, a window will pop-up with your choices. Select the application you would like for the file type and click OK.
