Changing the Default Font and Spacing in MS Word


Overview:
Microsoft Word has the default font and font size of Calibri (Body) 11 point. Follow the steps below to change the default settings. Changing the default settings will make it so every new document will have the settings you want automatically so you do not have to change the font every time.

 

Changing Default Fonts

  1. On the Home ribbon, select the small rectangle in the bottom right of the Font box.


  1. Change the Font, Font Style and Size to what you would like your default to be.

NOTE: There is a preview section so you can see what your choices will look like.

  1. Select Set as Default and this will save the changes to all future documents.
  2. Select if you want the change for only the current document of for all documents. Then, select OK.

 

Changing Line Spacing

In Word, the default line spacing and paragraph spacing has been increased to improve readability. The default spacing after a line has been increased to 8 points. The default line spacing is 1.15. Follow the steps below to change your default to single spaced lines with no spacing before or after.

 

  1. On the Home ribbon, select the small rectangle in the bottom right of the Paragraph box.



  1. Change the Before and After spacing to zero, Line Spacing to Single and At: to blank.



  1. Select Set as Default and this will save the changes to all future documents.
  2. Select if you want the change for only the current document of for all documents. Then, select OK.
