Overview:
This document explains the many types of questions available in quiz creation within D2L.
Common features of all question types include:
- Some questions allow you to title them which will be for your eyes only and not students.
- Many question types allow you the option of inserting an image. Click the Insert Stuff
or Other Insert Options
button and then click on Insert Image to upload pictures to show up on questions.
- You may display hints depending on the type of question by either clicking on Options and then clicking Add Hint or click on the Expand question hint section and enter text in the Questions Hint box.
- You may provide question feedback depending on the type of question by either clicking on Options and then clicking Add Feedback or click on the Expand question feedback section and enter text in the Question Feedback box.
- The question preview will be on the right-hand side.
- Click Save to save the question and return to the main page.
- Click on the down arrow next to Save and select Save and New to save the question and create a new question of the same type or Save and Copy to create a copy of the question you were working on.
Question Types

A. Create a multiple choice question:

- Type your question in Question Text box.
- Enter answer choices under Answers. NOTE: You may add more options by clicking Add Answer below the answer choices. You may also choose to delete answer choices by clicking on the X beside the choice you want to delete.
- Select a correct answer by clicking on the circle to the left of the answer choice.
- You can rearrange the answer choices by dragging and dropping the dotted rectangle to the left of the choice or you can select Randomize answer order.
- Determine how many points the question is worth in the Points box.
B. Create a true or false question:

- Type your question in Question Text box.
- Click on the circle determining which answer choice is correct.
- Determine how many points the question is worth in the Points box.
C. Create a fill in the blanks question:

- Determine how many points the question is worth in the Points box.
- Select the difficulty of the question.
- Insert an image if applicable and provide alternative text for the image.
- Type your fill in the blank beginning in the Text # 1 box.
- Type in the answer to the question in the Answer text box.
- Enter 100 in the Weight (%) for the correct answer. If you would like to add more than one correct answer, click the Add Answer button.
- Choose how you would like the answers to be checked by choosing an option from the Evaluation column:
- Case Insensitive
- Case Sensitive
- Regular Expression
- In the Text # 2 box, type what you wish to appear after the fill in the blank input box. NOTE: You can add additional blank and text boxes by clicking on Add Blank or Add Text near the top. You can remove blank and text boxes by clicking on the trashcan icon in the remove column.
D. Create a multi-select question:

- Type your question in Question Text box.
- Enter answer choices under Answers. NOTE: You may add more options by clicking Add Answer below the answer choices. You may also choose to delete answer choices by clicking on the X beside the choice you want to delete.
- Select a correct answers by clicking on the circle to the left of the answer choice.
- You can rearrange the answer choices by dragging and dropping the dotted rectangle to the left of the choice or you can select Randomize answer order.
- Determine how many points the question is worth in the Points box.
- Choose what Grading Style you would like:
- All or Nothing
- Correct Selections
- Correct Answers, Limited Selections
- Right Minus Wrong Selection
E. Create a matching question:

- Enter question point value in Points box.
- Select the difficulty of the question.
- Type your question in Question Text box.
- Insert an image if applicable and provide alternative text for the image.
- Choose what Grading you would like:
- Equally weighted
- All or nothing
- Right minus wrong
- Type in your question choices in the Value column of the Choices section. NOTE: The default number of matching items is two. To add other question choices you may click the Add Choice icon and you may change how many choices you would like to add. If you do add question choices be sure to do the same process in the Matches section; D2L will not automatically add them for you.
- Type in the matches you would like to have in the Value column of the Matches section.
- Choose which answer the match corresponds to by selecting it from the Correct Choice drop-down boxes.
F. Create an ordering question:

- Enter question point value in Points box.
- Select the difficulty of the question.
- Type your question in Question Text box.
- Insert an image if applicable and provide alternative text for the image.
- Choose what Grading you would like:
- Equally weighted
- All or nothing
- Right minus wrong
- Enter your answers in the Value column and make sure the order is correct. NOTE: The answers will automatically be randomized for students while taking the quiz.
G. Create a written response question:

- Type your question in Question Text box.
- In the Options for this type of question you can choose to write initial text for students to work from in the Initial Text box or type in an Answer Key statement if you would like for yourself to refer to while grading. NOTE: A written response question must be graded by you or a TA. D2L cannot grade a written response question due to too many variations of answers.
- You can allow the HTML Editor to be used in student responses.
- You can allow students to insert images or add attachments.
- Enter question point value in Points box.
H. Create a short answer question:

- Type your question in Question Text box.
- Choose how you would like the answers to be checked by choosing one of the Radio buttons from the Evaluation column:
- Case Insensitive
- Case Sensitive
- Regular Expression
- Type in the answer to the question in the Answers for Blank 1 box. You can add multiple correct answers by pressing enter after each correct answer for that blank.
- Click on Add Blank if there is another part of the question that needs to be answered.
- Enter question point value in Points box. NOTE: If you have more than one blank you can choose if the points will be distributed evenly with each blank answered correctly or the points can only be earned if ALL blanks are answered correctly.
I. Create an arithmetic question:

- Enter question point value in Points box.
- Select the difficulty of the question.
- Type your question in the Question Text box. Make sure to have all {variables} surrounded with curly braces.
- Insert an image if applicable and provide alternative text for the image.
- Check the box if you allow students to have attachments to support answers.
- Type the formula that you use to calculate the correct answer in the Formula box. Make sure to have all {variables} surrounded with curly braces.
- Determine how a question is to be evaluated in terms of answer precision, tolerance, units and case sensitivity.
- Under the Variables section you must define all of the variables you used in the Question Text.
- Type the name of your variable (for example, x) in the Name column for the first variable.
- Type the minimum value for the variable in the Min column.
- Type the maximum value for the variable in the Max column.
- Select the number of decimal places for the variable in the Decimal Places column from the drop-down list.
- The Step column is used when choosing random numbers from the range you specify in the Min and Max boxes. For example: If a variable x is created with a Min=10, a Max=100 and a Step=5, the system will only choose values for x that are increments of 5 above 10 (15, 20, 25, 30 etc.) when generating questions.
- Repeat these steps until all the variables used in Question Text are accounted for.
NOTE: Click the ? next to the Formula Test button for more information regarding setting up a formula.
J. Create a significant figures question:

- Enter question point value in Points box.
- Select the difficulty of the question.
- Type your question in the Question Text box. Make sure to have all {variables} surrounded with curly braces.
- Insert an image if applicable and provide alternative text for the image.
- Check the box if you allow students to have attachments to support answers.
- Type the formula that you use to calculate the correct answer in the Formula box. Make sure to have all {variables} surrounded with curly braces.
- Determine how a question is to be evaluated in terms of deductions for incorrect significant figures, tolerance, units and case sensitivity.
- Under the Variables section you must define all of the variables you used in the Question Text.

- Type the name of your variable (for example, x) in the Name column for the first variable.
- Type the minimum value for the variable in the Min column.
- Type the maximum value for the variable in the Max column.
- Select the number of decimal places for the variable in the Decimal Places column from the drop-down list.
- The Step column is used when choosing random numbers from the range you specify in the Min and Max boxes. Exponents also are to be inputted for the Step though it can be set to 1.
- Repeat these steps until all the variables used in Question Text are accounted for.

K. Create a multi-short answer question:

- Enter question point value in Points box.
- Select the difficulty of the question.
- Type your question in Question Text box.
- Insert an image if applicable and provide alternative text for the image.
- Determine how many input boxes you want available for students to type their answers.
- Type the answers to the question in the Answer Text boxes. NOTE: You may add more options by clicking Add Answer above the Answer column. You may also choose to have fewer than three options by clicking the trash can icon next to any of the choices.
- Enter a percentage in the Weight (%) column for your answers. For example, if you have a four-part answer, type in 25 for each correct answer.
- Choose how you would like the answers to be checked by choosing an option from the Evaluation column:
- Case Insensitive
- Case Sensitive
- Regular Expression
